There are lots of photographers out there who offer newborn photography. All of them providing a service and pricing structure which is unique to their business, and this can vary hugely from studio to studio. But how much is newborn photography really worth?
Ok I know, I’m a photographer who specialises in newborn and baby photography. So when I try to stress to people the value of newborn photography, they sometimes think I’m only trying to sell them my services. This is true to small a degree, I offer a service which I hope people will choose me to provide for them. However, newborn photography is so much more than just a fun thing you may or may not decide to do with your new baby.
For a long time, the most photographed event of our lives has been the wedding ceremony. Couples can plan for months and even years to get their day exactly as they want it. And one of the biggest tasks is to find a photographer who’s work they love. A photographer who they connect with and trust to capture the fun and emotion of their special day. Finding the right photographer is often their top priority.
Well, because your wedding is a one day event not to be repeated. It’s the most important day of your life… right?
Well… yes it is for some.
However, for the couples who decide to start a family, the welcoming of your baby into the world makes your wedding ceremony pale into insignificance. From the very first moment you see, hold and smell your newborn child, your world will change forever. The love you’ll feel will be stronger and more powerful than you could ever have imagined. Your wedding day will be a distant memory – this, THIS will be the most important day and moment of your life.
Newborn Photography is a growing trend. It’s designed for babies 14 days or less. Tiny little babies, still curled up and brand new to the world. All those tiny special details; milk spots, whisps of hair, pouty lips, curled up fingers and toes. These will change and disappear every single day as baby gets older.
Because of this, a newborn session cannot be re-done. It is literally a once-in-a-lifetime event. Other stages can be captured over a longer period of time, but the newborn stage is gone after just 2 short weeks. 2 weeks!
At their portrait reveal and ordering session (about 2 weeks after the initial photo shoot), ALL of my clients say something along the lines of “I can’t believe how much he/she has changed already, I’m so glad we got this done!”.
I have clients who come to me to get their baby photographed for the first time when they are around 6 or 7 months old. More often than not they express their regret at not booking in for a newborn session.
Sometimes it’s for reasons such as they didn’t think about it until after baby arrived, and by then it was too late. Or maybe they wanted to get them done but baby was in hospital for a while after birth.
But usually it’s because they thought it was maybe a little too expensive, or they thought they couldn’t afford it at the time. However, looking back, that new phone or ipad they just HAD to have? All those designer outfits so that baby could look bang on trend? All of the material possessions that they considered more important to spend their money on instead? They’d give them up in a heart beat if they could go back in time and have the chance of creating those special and fleeting memories. Unfortunately that’s not an option. At least not until someone actually designs a time machine!
When I speak to people about the value of newborn photography, yes Im talking about something I offer. But mostly Im talking about the memories of the creation of your brand new family. The chance to capture and set in stone those moments which pass in the blink of an eye. The creation of images which can be passed down through your family for generations. Life. Family. Love.
So if you’re wondering how much newborn photography is really worth, the answer shouldn’t be a monetary amount. It should be how much these images are worth to you.
See you soon!
